EUSS Advice and Support in London
Since September, our advice service has supported over 120 vulnerable individuals in navigating the EU Settlement Scheme. The majority of inquiries focused on switching from pre-settled to settled status, often accompanied by questions about permitted absences.
Through our community partners, we received a broad range of inquiries from a diverse pool of users encompassing non-EEA family members, victims of modern slavery, elderly UK residents, and individuals with extremely complex situations.
In response, we have launched a comprehensive new resource on eVisas, which provides useful information on eVisas for those who have a status under the EU Settlement Scheme.
For further information on resources, please explore our Resource Hub!
Please note: our EUSS Advice Service will be closed from 20th December, and will resume fully on 6th January 2025.
Outreach
On November 12th, our Lydia Martin was a speaker at the EU Delegation’s EU Citizens Gathering 2024, talking about the challenges faced by vulnerable EU citizens in the UK, and how important it is for organisations in the sector to recognise and create spaces for community groups.
Within the same week we attended Migrant Voice’s event on Navigating the Digital Immigration System, and discussed with several stakeholders the challenges imposed by digitalisation, and ways in which we can positively support vulnerable service users in this area.
Similarly, at the Winter Wellbeing Event held by Southwark council, we heard from local stakeholders and organisations on increasing support and assistance over the Winter period to locals in Southwark.
Additionally, we’ve also attended several community events in our target boroughs. We’ve discussed intersectional issues prevalent in the communities most affected by the EU Settlement Scheme at ESOL classes, local stakeholder events in Barking and Dagenham and general events with wider networks.
We’ve interacted with over 100 people on the EUSS by attending a few community events this Winter – this achievement is a testament to the dedication we put in our work at New Europeans!
To end our outreach activities for 2024 and celebrate International Migrants Day, on Wednesday 18th December we will join Kanlungan at their event, to discuss relevant issues affecting migrants as a collective!
Moving forward into 2025, we aim to continue to interact with marginalised communities and build their capacity in navigating the EU Settlement Scheme and the newly implemented changes to the immigration system. We will build upon the foundation of work we have already established and strive to expand our reach, offering our resources and support services to a wider audience.
We will continue to work together with our community partners: Shpresa, to support the local Albanian community in Barking and Dagenham; Community House, to assist the Somali community in North London; Latin American House, to serve the Latin American Community; and Rota, to support the Roma community in London.
Upcoming events & sessions
We have maintained our drop-in sessions in collaboration with our community partners across London. Notably, we continue our regular sessions with Latin American House, as well as our monthly drop-ins at Barking Learning Centre and in Edmonton, both facilitated in collaboration with Shpresa.
Since September, our drop-in sessions have allowed us to provide direct advice to approximately 60 individuals. This has been made possible through the invaluable interpretation support offered by our community partners, enabling us to communicate more effectively.
The individuals we interacted with expressed their relief in receiving free and reliable information on the EU Settlement Scheme, and found our informative leaflets to be helpful and concise for people with limited English language skills. Many were also grateful to receive these resources in their languages. You can find these resources in several community languages available on our Resource Hub.
Our advice service will be closed over the festive period, and as a result, we will resume our drop-in and information sessions from January 6th onwards.
