A meeting tomorrow in Parliament and online will explore democratic participation for migrants – in light of recent and future elections, and the link with residency and citizenship rights.

Speakers 

Dr. Ruvi Ziegler, Chair of New Europeans UK and Associate Professor in International Refugee Law at the University of Reading.

Ruvi will look comparatively at the question of voting and candidacy rights for non-citizens, including lessons drawn from the electoral expansion in Scotland.

Lara Parazotto – Co-founder and Executive Director of the Migrant Democracy Project. MDP campaigns for residence-based voting rights and supports migrants in participating in UK politics through voter registration and community organising. Lara will discuss democratic empowerment and voting rights for different migrant groups.

Jessica Maddocks senior Organiser with the Migration and Refugee Organising team at Citizens UK and Co-leader of the strategy for Pathways to Citizenship campaign.

Jess will focus on the importance of participation in public and democratic life to strengthen civil society and cohesion, along with pragmatic ways to improve pathways to citizenship within the Government’s current plans for earned settlement.
